The Indians' valiant effort on Tuesday night proved to be for naught when Juan Pierre slapped a walk-off single into left field in the bottom of the 14th inning.
The Tribe faced deficits of 5-2 and 7-5, but Manny Acta's club continued to show its resiliency. Shin-Soo Choo's RBI fielder's choice tied the game in the top of the 9th. Gordon Beckham, Chicago's 2nd baseman, should have turned a routine double play, but he instead bobbled the baseball while attempting to make an ill-advised throw to the plate. Even though Beckham did record an out at 2nd base, Ezequiel Carrera scored the tying run.
The Indians and White Sox both had golden opportunities to forge a lead in extra innings. However, the Sox stranded a lead-off triple in the 11th, and the Tribe wasted a bases-loaded, 1-out situation in the 13th.
Then, with 1 out and runners at the corners in the last of the 14th, Acta summoned David Huff because all 7 of the Indians' relief pitchers had been used. The 1st batter Huff faced was Pierre, and the rest, as they say, is history.
