And so the freefall continues.
On Monday night, in front of a sparse gathering at Progressive Field, the lowly Seattle Mariners extended the Indians' losing streak to 4 and divisional deficit to 5.5 games behind the surging Detroit Tigers.
Playing without Travis Hafner, who was forced to the disabled list because of a foot injury, the depleted Tribe offense mustered only 2 runs. Back-to-back RBI singles from Lou Marson and Ezequiel Carrera in the 2nd provided the only scoring for the Indians. Following that game-tying rally, the Tribe bats fell asleep. They nearly awakened in the bottom of the 9th, but Carrera hit a routine grounder to 1st base with runners at 2nd and 3rd, sealing the Indians' fate.
The Mariners plated the eventual winning tally in the top of the 9th off of Chris Perez. Perez hit 2 batters and committed a throwing error to begin the inning before Ichiro Suzuki whiffed. However, Franklin Gutierrez, a former Indian, delivered a go-ahead sacrifice fly to center field. Carrera's throw was excellent, but Miguel Olivo managed to beat it by a split-second.
Fausto Carmona pitched well enough to win as he allowed 2 runs in 6 innings, but the right-hander netted a no-decision.
