Vinnie Pestano's rise from unknown prospect to elite set-up man has keyed the Indians' surprising 2011 season.
But, on Tuesday night at a soggy Fenway Park, the Tribe suffered a gut-wrenching defeat when Pestano allowed the winning run to score in the bottom of the 9th inning.
After inducing a weak fly out to begin that crucial frame, Pestano encountered trouble. Jason Varitek smashed a single into center field, Jarrod Saltalamacchia pinch-ran for Varitek, and Josh Reddick's soft single to right-center advanced Saltalamacchia to 2nd base. Jacoby Ellsbury then stepped to the plate and lined a base-hit to center. Ezequiel Carrera's throw to the plate was slightly erratic, allowing Saltalamacchia to slide in safely.
Solo home runs off the bats of Jason Kipnis and Lonnie Chisenhall represented Cleveland's offense against Josh Beckett and the BoSox bullpen. Kipnis' homer was his 3rd in as many days.
David Huff surrendered 1 unearned run in 5 solid innings of work. Huff is a candidate to be demoted to AAA Columbus following the arrival of Ubaldo Jimenez, but the young left-hander is pitching well enough to retain his starting spot.
