Cleveland Indians: Tribe Fails to Complete Sweep

8-28-11     vs. Kansas City     L, 2-1     65-65

Fielding a lineup that included several inexperienced players, the Indians mustered only 5 hits against Bruce Chen and the Royals on Sunday afternoon at Progressive Field.
Jim Thome, recently acquired from the Minnesota Twins, provided a spark for the Tribe in the 1st 2 games of the series, but he struck out as a pinch-hitter in the 8th inning of the finale.
Before Thome's untimely whiff, the Indians were stymied by Chen, a soft-tossing lefty who has dominated the Wahoos throughout his career.  Chen hurled 7 1/3 frames of 1-run baseball, and his lifetime record when facing the Tribe improved to 5-2.
Chen's counterpart, Justin Masterson, received very little offensive support, which was not surprising considering Masterson has dealt with that this entire season.  Despite yielding 9 hits, Masterson held Kansas City to 2 tallies in 6 innings.  Masterson, though, suffered his 8th loss.
Carlos Santana's bases-loaded walk in the 1st plated the Indians' lone run of the contest.  However, Shelley Duncan popped out and Kosuke Fukudome tapped into a double play to end the threat.
Making his major league debut, outfielder Jerad Head collected an infield single in 3 at-bats.
Santana and the Indians fell a run short of a sweep
