Jim Thome's return has energized the city of Cleveland and its baseball team.
35,370 excited fans pushed their way through the Progressive Field turnstiles on Saturday night to watch the Indians battle the Kansas City Royals, and the Tribe did not disappoint the large crowd.
In the bottom of the 6th, Thome, who was celebrating his 41st birthday, lofted a solo home run over the left field wall. The homer, Thome's 335th as an Indian, tied the game at 4 and reinvigorated the Wahoo followers.
The Royals regained the lead in the 7th courtesy of Alex Gordon and his 3-run blast to right-center.
Back-to-back doubles by Kosuke Fukudome and Asdrubal Cabrera in the home half of the 7th pulled the Tribe to within 2, but the Indians could have scored more than 1 run.
The Tribe then staged an improbable rally in the 8th. With 2 outs and the bases empty, Lonnie Chisenhall laced a pinch-hit single to left. Fukudome walked, and Cabrera belted a hanging curveball from Louis Coleman deep into the late-summer air. When it finally landed, the Indians had an 8-7 advantage.
In the 9th, Salvador Perez hit a bloop single that scooted past the center fielder, Ezequiel Carrera. The error advanced Perez to 2nd, but the miscue did not faze Chris Perez. The Tribe's closer threw out Perez at 3rd on an attempted sacrifice bunt before whiffing Gordon and Melky Cabrera.
